Fall is the time for Sunday,Daylight Bike Polo

The dog days of summer is finally over. That means we get to play bike polo in the daylight again. It has been an extremely hot summer.
Yesterday, Sunday, we set up and played at our DPI tournament spot. Mailman Jay and I made angle bkts with velcro fastners for a quick and easy set up/tear down. Success!
Mike T. Mailman J, Jacob, Adam Cruz, Nathan Perryman, Shampoolio(Julio) and Hot Rod(Justin) and Me, played from 3pm till dark.

So as of Oct. 3, 2011 this is our polo schedule:
Monday Funday Polo at Southern and Dorsey(South parking lot), Tempe, 8pm till ?
Wednesday Grass Polo at 16th Street and Colter, Phoenix, 7:30 til 10:30
Sunday Daytime Polo at Southern and Dorsey(North parking lot) 3pm till dark.

A Conversation with.....Me!....the N.O.D

With Face Book and other social networks, I have not kept up with this blog. So I find myself at a cross road. Keep it active(daily or weekly at least), or put it to bed.

This next October marks a year since I've written here. It is PBP,Phoenix Bike Polo blog. We have at least 4 polo clubs in Arizona. Phoenix, Tempe, Tucson and Prescott. I would continue to comment largely about the Phoenix family with added events, club news, play by play, links and so on.

What do you think? Boat anchor or continue? I say keep it. Helps keep us connected. Please let me know your thoughts. Helps.

Hallowed Grounds

Around 7th Street and Thunderbird road, Phx. Az. This is only an example of the destruction, October 4th and 5th, 2010.

Un-typical weather for October. 50 mile an hour winds and large hail in some parts of the Valley. Downed trees and power lines. One car dealer on the west side lost 80 cars and trucks to hail damage. Flagstaff had tornado's destroy homes, and cut a devastating swath through the Forrest. I have lived in Az since 1959. Never seen anything like this.

Tue evening, some flooding through out the valley. Polo at the YMCA was obviously canceled. So we figured Wed. polo at the sacred grounds, Desert Storm Park, would be canceled too. I walked the field around 2pm Wed. Dry, clean and freshly mowed. A real magical place. We played. 8 players showed up. Three unbelievable games. Each so close, anyone could have beat the other.

This is our night for Noob's and a more casual play. The Tempe spot has been in action for a couple years. Most of the originators have long gone, but is being preserved by new and very good talent and dedicated polo ambassador's. The emphasis is on bike polo promotion and entry level play.

Last night was one to remember. 14 bikes, 14 players, 14 malets, 28 wheels, at least 896 spokes, and one lit ball. We split into 3 teams . No throw in here. The old highschool way, 3 captains and pick-um.

I think 6, twelve minute games were played and each team won one and lost one. Very evenly matched. The level of play was kicked up a notch too. Joe Guarino, a transplant from LA, and seasoned polo player, brought his family out to share in grass polo and BBQ. He brought ribs.

On the grill : Boca burgers, Pork ribs, Large beef franks, Hot and spicy chicken brots, Beef burgers, Oh and Daveys extra large, bacon covered burger. Nathan Perryman brought Potato salad and cut fresh water melon, Jason Boyd really stepped up and helped me out a ton.

What a fun mid-week treat. Felt like a camping trip. Next time we'll add smores'. Or maybe a beer permit. Yea ok beer !!

Last night, Monday Funday Polo in Tempe was outstanding. Long games and good friends.

Tonight, Tuesday the 14th of Sept. is Polo at the YMCA, 17th Ave and Missouri. This spot WILL be gone in Oct. Lets enjoy it now.

Wednesday is Grass Polo at 16th Street and Colter, Phx. For the last few months our numbers have grown. On average 9 to 10 players. It is the training grounds for better hardcourt polo players. I also hear that the PBP BBQ'er might be fired up Wed. Even a Vegan burger or two.

In a couple months the best place to play bike polo in Arizona is going away. The YMCA is putting a full gymnasium on it's place. Good for them, the community, bad for us.

Come play with us till its gone. And help find us a new place to play. Talking to the city is a no go. What we need is a politician, a cash cow, or a sugar daddy.

The Sunday Court

The Sunday Court at the Monarch Apt. Hardy and Baseline is no longer available. Our resident player has moved out and the manager says we have to go.

This spot was killer. Old tennis court, no nets, no pipes, some sizable cracks, and we were able to leave the side boards up till yesterday. Polo BBQ and pick up play for hours Sunday, as a tribute to a lost cause.

After Oct/Nov we will have lost two regular spots for hardcourt bike polo. This is getting serious. With over 400 tennis courts in our city, why in the hell can't we have one, locked down for us to safely play.

Almost 2800 miles and over 65 hours of drive time, just to play bike polo. But it was worth it. There were over 800 total games played in 3 days and each team played 5 games Friday and Sat. and double elim on Sunday. If you finished in the top 10 on Friday, you were guaranteed in on Sunday. Polozona and Mike and the Piranha did this.

Way too many games played by our boys to write about. I think the boys played 14 games. When Sunday finally came, both teams were even. Both finished 9th out of 68 registered teams.

Sunday the 11th will be our last team practice before NA's. We play at the Monarch Apt. tennis court, Baseline and Hardy in Tempe. This spot has been abandoned for years. Since NA's are played on tennis courts this is a great place to practice. Every one should be there.

I will load bikes in the "PBP Bike Polo Special" trailer Sunday as well, barring any needed repairs.

We are really doing this trip on stems and seeds. My wish, and I think they deserve it, is to have a full sponsor or partner. I don't know how to accomplish this. Where is this game going? How big will it get? Are the Piranha(our 12 year olds) in a position to see bike polo in a whole different world? I think the answer is coming soon. Madison may be a turning point for bike polo.

This trip is epic for us. We have done nothing bigger as family and friends. (Piranha #1 mom is coming..this is big!!) My wish is for safe travel, adventure, and no freekin broken bones.

From our experiance, this new head has some issues. Screw holes on the seem, caps cracked right away, nut pocket spun out first thing, heavy.

This is our ride to Madison.

Well, it's here. Next Tue. the 13th, we leave for Madison Wis. 8 of us will drive the 15oo plus miles to play polo on a world wide stage. 60 plus teams registered so far. Phoenix is sending 6 players, two teams: Team#1, Mailman Jay, MiniMike and Davey.

Team#2, Mike T. and the Piranha#1(Jacob Boyd) and Piranha#2(AJ Maldonado).

These guys have spent time practicing and working together for weeks. With a $3600.00 first place purse, should be interesting.

I've heard and read that some teams are sponsored for this event. We are on a shoe string budget. A family affair. I won't beg, but help would be good.

Tonight is grass polo, at the same spot. 16th street and Colter. We will play/practice our last time Sunday at the tennis court, Monarch Apt in Tempe, 4pm till dark.

JimP has set up a wordpress blog and forum for us. Very soon we will announce the change. There is alot going on and I have catching up to do.

I am excited to start PBP's own forum. It will be OPEN for all to use and create topics and comments. I intend it to be bike polo(or it's all about the bike) specific, but we'll see how it goes.

If you want good tourney and intense play, come to the Y. This week I got a text from a youngster that said his legs felt like he had ridin 50 miles on his roadie, after polo at the Y. Usually 8 to 10 show up so there is opportunity to play alot of polo.

We are using net goals donated to us by the y and are the street hockey type. Tall and narrow. With help and design from the Mid-West poloites, I am in the process of building our own. 6'x3'.

I am leaving for Santa Cruz tomorrow and wont have access to the Net. I'll catch up in a week or so. Polo, and a leg of the Tour of Cali is on the agenda while there. Pumped!

12 Peeps game to the best practice spot. Hardy and Baseline in Tempe. Play usually starts around 2pm and lasts till 5/6pm. This court is an old, unused tennis court, no nets and the pipes removed. It is situated between the freeway and the Az canal, in the farthest back corner of the Monarch Apt complex. If this place had lights, it would be the best Tempe summer place to play bike polo.

This day started out cool and windy. At one point, I wished I'd left my wheel covers at home. The wind made my bike feel like a sail boat. Very hard to control. It calmed down later in the afternoon.

We had a visitor from Tulsa, Steven Southard. Always great to have good folk jump in and play. Also an FNG showed up to try his hand as well, Nathon Perryman. MTB'er at heart, now hooked on bike polo. Thanks for comin Nate!!

Lets give props to all who came:

Mailman Jay, Piranha#1 and #2. MiniMike, Justinrunns, Hot Rod(Justin), Julio, Nathon, Stevenso, Davy Carfax, Dus, and Me.

When you have the passion for polo, it is hard to just watch. I'm not good at it. Maybe my new roll is official heckler and play by play. Some even say I would make a good ref at tournies. No mercy !

Lots of good quality games tonight. Julio broke his fixie again(GEEEZ) and played/ rode my new NYC bike. Minimike was on tonight. Troy made it too. At the end of the eve there was a grudge match. Tournament style. Teams: Mailman Jay, MiniMike and Davy Carfax vs. Mike T, Troy and Piranha#1(Jacob). Jays team won 3 zip I think.

Wednesday April 21st and Grass Polo. Any time after 7:30. 16th street and Colter.

TBAG (Tempe Bicycle Action Group) BBQ and Social Event

Sunday was a fun day in the sun with a bike. Papago park was the scene for TBAG hosting a BBQ and PBP was invited to set up and showcase bike polo.

This was one of the busiest days ever. Up at 3am, drove to Tucson for the bi-annual bike swap meet. This is an event destination. The in entire 4th ave block is closed for this. Lots of goodies sold , traded, and bought. It's good to hang with MT. He has a nose for finding the deal of the century.

Then hauled ass back to Phx for the Tbag BBQ by 2pm with bikes and gear, to share our sport with noob friendlies. And it was good. Girls/women played, laughed and had fun along with some very good seasoned mountain bikers. Felt bad for one Mtb'er, back wheel came loose and broke derailleur hanger, done for the day. But he had a huge smile on his face. Good enough for me.

I had just finished a new polo build and brought it for testing. It got a full day of borrowed use. Solid at the end of the day. Me happy.

All types of bikes were represented. Tandems, Unies, Mtb, Fixie, Comfort, Road, Cruiser, Handmade tall, Loungers, Touring and more. Two guys on handmade tall bikes even tried their hand at jousting. Crazy.

This was also a first for PBP and AZHC. Noobs out numbered vet players easily 2:1. Did I mention this was on grass, with pbp grass style mallets and ball. I am sure everyone had a super good time. Thanks for the host organizers, TBAG, Mike Tretter for bringing the gear bag, goals and extra bikes. Mailman Jay and Piranha#1 for your good tutoring and extra bikes. Dus for being the polo ambassador. Good food, Excellent keg beer, and friendship.

Good crowd, Tons of polo played. And of course I had just mentioned that I had not taken a tumble in some time. Well hell bent and self inflicted malot under the front tire and I went down hard. Right shoulder fail and head bounced off the hocky rink floor a few times. I will never understand why some don't were their skid lids. My Giro saved my ol' cranium. Xrays tomorrow.

YEA!!! No broken bones. Guess the ol' Marine is still purty salty. Heat, ice, ibuprofen, polo.

This was a great "first" tourney for the ABQ crew. Nice job.

Me, Mailman Jay and Piranha#1(Jacob) went and unbelievably won the event. Jay and Jacob did their magic. 3G...Three Generations of polo players. Very proud.

Hannah, Davy Carfax and Dustin from AZHC also made the trek. Denver, Colo. Springs and San Diego were there too. Saturday the locals also put on a side match of 2v2. Jacob and Jay paired with other cities to win 1st and 2nd. Jacob took MVP honors for the regular match and Mailman Jay took MVP for the side match.

Thanks to Bret, Robin and all who put this on. Well worth the drive.

Wow Where Does The Time Go ?

First : Tuesday Bike Polo at the YMCA roller hockey rink.

9 peeps. All grass players but one, Davey. We had a blast. The highlight of the evening was a spectacular crash between Piranha #1 and #2. At top speed Jacob speared AJ in the goal for a saved shot. These two have no fear and don't have any respect for their elders(on the court that is).Played the regular 3x3 hardcourt version for 12 games of pick-up and the last game grass style. ALL IN ! 5x4. It was mayhem. Very hard to score, but way fun and dead ass tired at the end.

Second: Wednesday Grass Bike Polo at the sacred polo grounds. 8 peeps, so with 4x4 and three games played to 10, our butts were kicked. I broke a chain right off, and there were several crashes, nothing too serious.

It is an amazing thing to play two different versions of bike polo, grass and hardcourt, and do each relativly well. And I do believe that our young guys have developed their cannon like shots, ball handling, and passing, from their grass roots. If this sport lasts, Jacob, AJ, MiniMike and others, will be at the top of the game of Bike Polo.

GRASS POLO RULES !!

Last week 6 showed up. This week 12.

Tracy, Troy, MiniMike, Piranha#1#2#3, Larry, Chris Altman, Mailmah Jay, JimP, Mike T, Me.

It was the best polo ever. Three games played and since it is spring break, no one had to leave early. Each game lasts about 30/40 minutes. And all close . Mailman Jay had a target on his back. He went down at least twice, once over the bars. The Piranha were hot tonight. #2, AJ, was on fire. The boys speed and accurate cannon shots are something to see. Jacob is the one to watch though. He will challenge you to the bitter end and think nothing of it, making you wonder what just happened.

It was great having everyone there. Chris...you rock ! Enjoyed your frienship on and off the field. And, of course the "Grill". Reverse Happy Hour. What a way to end a perfect polo evening.

Weird rainy Weather for March OTen

Tuesday at the Y was awesome. 8 peeps showed up. It had rained all day and cleared for polo at 6pm. Cold and windy. Front wheel covers acted like kites. Lots of polo played. Justin (Hotrod) Julio and Conrad are stepping up their game in a big way. Glad to have them around.

Wednesday grass polo was the same weather pattern. 6 peeps, cold, windy and rain started about 9:30. Along with this crazy weather come sickness. The flu or some kind of cold is really going around. I have had it for over a week, and this is spreading.

The NOD is moving into a house this coming week and it has a garage/shop. So I'll be gathering up all my tools and soon.....Mallet Crafting by the NOD will be open.

Last week we had the dad of one of our young Piranha ( Larry ) jump in the practice session and wow !! He wants a polo specific bike now.

This is a family fun thing to do. If all of my family showed up there would be 7 on the court. I am very proud of that. And then if you counted my adopted and extended family, well you get the point. Bike polo fever.

Way too much to offer here, and words just wont do. But what the hell:

Two roller hockey rinks about 5 miles apart. Am and Pm starts both days. After day one, the 3 Phx teams were 2 loses and 2 wins. Not lookin too good. Because of the formula for scoring and being scored on, two teams made it to bracket play day 2.

Team 3G, Mailman Jay, Jacob and me, started first on Sunday. We played Seattle's best with Seebass. Jacob blasted a cannon shot across the front tire for the first score and shocked the crowd and Seattle. Jason scored again for a 2 to nothing score. We should have protected the 2 points and settled in for the remainder time. But didn't and lost. We lost two games, but didn't matter. Jacob set the crowd on fire with his accurate, loud rifle like shots.

Team Natural Born PlayAz: MiniMike, AJ and Davey played in the Pm. I am glad too so we could watch every second of it. You did not want to miss this.

Michael and AJ with Davey as keeper, simply devoured the competition. With AJ keeping things mixed up and Michael Getting the easy fast break, they won 3 out of 4 games and finished 4th over all out of 36 . It will take a bit for us to realize "what just happened" . Because Michael beat some of the best players on earth. I knew he could. It was a matter of time.

Ten of us are leaving for LA tomorrow for their annual Polo Tourney and BBQ. Joker has added a second roller hockey rink. A total of 36 teams have registered to play. That's 108 players descending on the LA bike polo scene. I have 12 bikes in my trailer and packed and ready to go.

Wednesday at the YMCA and Pizza

Our second time at the Y. 12 players, spectators, hecklers, bb-gun shooters, and my daughter Jinger and hubby brought 4 LARGE combo pizza's for the famished crew. Unexpected and very much appreciated.

The boys from Bike Cafe came too. Haven't seen them for a bit, but thay said it was nice to have a place to play a bit closer to home. It was great having them.

The list: Mailman Jay, Piranha#1, MiniMike, Piranha#2, Mike T., JimP, Kyle, David, Kyle(yes 2) DavyCarfax, Justinrunns and Me.

I didn't count how many pick-up games we played, but at 10 minutes each and playing till 930, a staggering amount of polo. LA, here we come.

PS: I am sure you are wondering about the bb-gun action. At 9pm a group of boys in the park next to the court, snuck up and hammered the court with bb's or soft pellet guns. No one was hurt or hit at all. Just a nuisance thing. Police were called, and asked us if this was our first time in this neighborhood. Why yes officer! "Don't you know this is the "HOOD" after dark. "

Great.

PSS: MiniMike took a pretty good fall and banged his shoulder. He has no meat on his bones. It hurts. We hope he is good for LA.

Grass polo tomorrow night and rest and pack thursday. Head west on Friday at noon. Can't wait.

These games are the best. Draws a good crowd ( beer helps) and the interest is high.

Everyone gives up a buck and throws their mallet into a pile. Then mallets are thrown randomly into piles of three. BINGO ! Teams.

4 teams played in a round robin sorta bracket, keeping it simple. These kind of games force people to step up their play. Very fun to see how they progress.

At the end Team # 3 won it all, undeafeted and winners of $12.00.

Team #3 consisted of : Mike Tretter, Piranha#1(Jacob Boyd) and your's Truely. Me!! Shizam!!

A Giant step made in our quest for a bonified spot to play Hardcourt Bike Polo.

We have agreed to a $5.00 charge per person, for the use and liability coverage. We will attack more ideas later and hopefully more agreeable terms. But, it's a good start and a place to play on Tuesday evenings under the lights.

My concerns with this arrangement is that alot, if not most polo players don't have $5.oo extra to spend every week. Our youngest players don't have wallets, credit cards, cash, keys, and I for one wont have them standing on the sidelines cause they don't have 5 bux.

I will campaign for other options later.

Grass Polo Wednesday Jan 2010

Seven players showed up to play some grass polo. What started out to be a nice evening, ended with thunder storm and rain. We completed two games and with the first lightning strike, got the flock out of there. Golf shafts and lightning don't mix.

Justinrunns rolled into our games too. He had just gotten back from LA and stopped by for some polo.

Even though MiniMike is my family and Grandson, I hate him. When he is on his game, you cannot keep him from scoring. With his 70 yard sprints, and tic tac ball control at the goal, he is amazing. We all try, but few succeed.

Justin rides fixed gear. And does very well. He keeps getting better and better. Thanks to all who came to play and weather the storm.

MKE Ski Pole Test

I made two polo mallets using the new and available Mke ski poles. They are bright Harley orange, and about $18.00 each with shipping.

Verdict after multiple games and several different players:

Heavy, Very stiff, no bending, no dents, too expensive.

In our humble opinion, don't powder coat these. Just adds unwanted weight, stiffness, and cost.

Monday Night Grass Polo

Desert Storm Park 16th Street and Colter, Phx. Park in the extended stay motel parking lot. The pit is just to the east. We usually play til 10 or so, depending when we get started.

We play everyone that shows up. Games are to 10 points or first to 15 with ties. The field is approx 50 yards wide and 100 yards long with a natural bowl effect for boundries.

I have talked to the City about the lighting at the park. It is ok, but not all lights are on. They tell me an "order" has been placed to turn them all on. mmmm

We provide mallets and ball. The ball is a softball size wiffle ball. At night I tape the ends of a 4" glow stick and jamb it into the ball. Bright and lasts all night.

Goals are 5 paces wide, made of clear 3/4" PVC pipe, with pen lights dropped in the bottom. One of Mike T. better ideas. Durable and again bright.

The ball is struck from the side only. Dribbling and scoring is done this way. High scoops are allowed, but very careful with high sticking. If you dab(foot down) you must peddle 2 full revs or strokes before touching the ball. If someone falls with no injury or mechanical, we play on. If the ball breaks or flattens out we stop in place.

Not too many rules. No t-boning, helmets are a must, and fun is mandatory.

If you can't tell, I am on a crusade to bolster our ranks. There are 1000's of mountain bikers and roadies in the Phoenix area. You can't tell me that some wouldn't enjoy using bike polo as another training tool to better their cycling experiance. 20 yard bike wind sprints for a couple hours ? Heaven. But most of all, great people. Spread the polo word for me. Grass or hardcourt, we play several times a week.

Just finished two Mallots with MKE shafts

I can get ski poles at almost any thrift store in Phx. These poles are available from Milwaukee Bikes, so I ordered two. Mainly to test 7075 aluminum poles and give an honest report, to buy these or not. They are expensive, but supposed to last.

We will give these the hack test. They don't seem to be much lighter than anything else I have made. Maybe it's time to buy a scale to find out.

Desert Storm Park is the best field on the planet for grass bike polo. Long with natural boundaries. Last night you could have seen some of the best 100 yard sprint to goal, mallet to mallet, saves, defence, and lucky goals(well maybe some skill ). We were expecting the worst for Az weather, but not so. A beautiful night and the yellow grass had just been cut. Perfect!

It was my first time back to play since carpal surgery. Maybe a little early, but had to. Last game of the year. It was good. There were some really good battles between Troy, MiniMike, Mailman Jay and the Piranha. Jacob Boyd, aka: Piranha#1, was on fire too. MVP material for sure. His mad skills are unbelievable. He has an over the front wheel shot from the right side that will blow your mind. HC players call this a "Superman", unclipped. He does it clipped in. In fact, out of 8 players last night, only one person rides with no clips. Jacob is not 12 yet. If he keeps up this quality of play, I can only guess where he'll be by the time he is 18.

This was one of the best, if not the best Sunday games ever. (I know, I say that alot). Even though I still can't play, It was awesome. 11 plairs showed up and did battle for almost 4 hours. Jim Panzer, a regular grass player came for the first time, and proved that grass/bmx players are the best. Quoted "Addicting".

Bob from Alb. New Mexico came by and played on his fixie. Super nice guy and hope he comes back too. I guess he has family in Tempe.

12 peeps showed up to play bike polo on an unbelievable quality roller hockey rink. The YMCA was good enough to allow us to showcase what the sport is all about. From eleven to 38 years old, they played.
After talking to the staff, I am hopeful we will back to play again. There are some concerns. Revenue and liability. Revenue meaning new members and volunteering. Liability means insurance. We will work on this. Because it is well worth it.

Next Tuesday, Dec. 22nd, the YMCA has given us permission to Play a "Game" or two on their roller hockey rink. Here's hoping enough folks show up to rep us well. Should be loads of fun. In my family alone there are 6 players. And I can count at least 10 more from grass polo and another 10 from AZHC/Tempe. Please come if you can. We need a home.

Monday Night in Tempe w/ AZHC Polo

Bike polo in a parking lot, minimul lighting, black asphalt, no side boundries, 12" back-stop boards at the ends, some traffic, and yet these guys draw a crowd almost every Monday night. Some of the best games are played here. Names like Trashcan, Carfax, Ramus, KOM, and others, set up and play till midnight, and then RIDE home. It's a community of cyclists.

We drive from Phx. of course, and always feel welcome. On polo days, our school age players have to do homework, then nap before going. From 8pm to midnight makes a sour kid the next day. They gladly oblige.

It looks like the YMCA is going to allow an exhibition game next Tue eve. the 22nd. We want a good showing. 3 generation players will be there. Wrist surgery is keeping the NOD from playing for a few weeks. No biggie, Mailman Jay and Co. will put on a good show.

Sorry, no pics of the Monday games. So grass at night will have to do. Don't forget, Wednesday nights are grass polo nights, our roots!

The Sunday daylight games are at the best court. BUT... Not many people show up. Why is that? Work? Lazy? Church? Too many pancakes? If you want to play on Sundays at the most rad court, Let us know. There are some very dedicated bike polo players out there. But it takes 6 to tango. Its no good for us to drive from PHX to Tempe when no one shows.

Seven came out to brave Arizona's cold season. I know you folks from other parts of the world may laugh, but when it's 35/40 degrees in the desert, it's cold. Layering is the way. Peel off clothes as you sweat, and put'em back on when you rest.

Monday Night AZHC Polo in Tempe and Two Bux !

Well, Justin asked for it, and got it. $2.00 throw in mini-tourney bike polo match. And it was a blast. If you wanted to play, put in your two bux, throw your mallot in the pile, and randomly toss 3 per team in piles. Surprisingly there were 5 teams for double elimination bracket play on a monday night, and dozens of spectators. The final outcome surprised us all. Once your team was randomly selected, you stayed with that team to the end. Piranha#1, aka: Jacob Boyd, Davy Carfax, and Greg, won it all!! Holy crap!! My eleven year old grandson was fer sure mvp of the match. His dad, Mailman Jay was very proud, as well as everyone there. They lost one game in semi's and won the last two games in sudden death back to back. Davy had two coast to coast scoring runs too. And had a rear blow out that sounded like a gun blast that got everyones attention. Then finished on a borrowed bike. Truely, these guys beat some of Arizonas best.

Jacob also got tangled up with Davy, went down, handle bar to sternom, 15 people to his aid, got up, no tears, and continued to rip it up.

I think this is going to be a bi-weekly thing till the Deset Polo Invite in Feb. This is not only way fun, but a good way to boost your skills and kick the level of play up a notch. For two bux, the winners each got $10.00. How bout that?

Three games played and had an absolute blast. Thanks to everyone for great competitive play and a saweeet after Thanksgiving Day! And we even had a cheering section. Thanks to Melissa, SH, Christina and Debra for watching and hoping your fav will win. More heckling next time.

Don't remember which team won the best out of three, don't matter. (Really I do, Mine!). Justinrunns and his fixed gear bike stood out today. His skill level has quadrupled in a very short time. Glad he is a part of our family.

I rode one handed and shot some foto's today too. Daylight play is rare, it is good.

Thanksgiving Week and Bike Polo

Wednesday is our regular grass polo game. We are adding a special day after Thanksgiving game Friday as well. Come join us for some daylight polo fun. 10 Am at Desert Storm Park 16th Street and Colter. Park behind the Motel, and come to the pit.

Seven players today. Mailman Jay, Justinrunns, Piranha#1, & #2, Dustin, Me and a surprise visit from Marco. We are trying to talk him into staying in PHX, and not going back to NYC. But he bought a round trip ticket.

We played a lot of games. All good. This is a great location. I only wish more players could come and enjoy this too.

Wed. Nov. 18th and Grass Polo " FUN "

It's Alive!! Our roots are deep in grass. And feels good and right at home. Mailman Jay is quoted: " I wish we could have our own tournement here so others could see just how much fun this is."

I had three 11 year old Grandsons here tonight. How cool is that? A deep talent pool for sure and recon Phx Bike Polo will last long after I'm out.

Three games played, and it was a bit chilly. Long handles and gloves for sure. This is the kind of weather we expected in Como Missouri. But did not happen.

Great games, and for those that did not come, you are missing the best Az has to offer. Grass Bike Polo.

The AZHC Polo Invite, is posted and will happen Feb. 20/21st. The location is not locked down yet, but soon.

Midwest Champeenship 2009

Long trip for me. But the polo in Columbia Mo. was awesome. 44 teams from all over the midwest, over 175 games played. The team "What Just Happened", Jason, MiniMike and Troy finished 5th overall. Very proud of our Phx boys.

The team "Phx Who" Me, Mike and Justin finished mid pack. There was some stiff competition, and every time we do a tourney, we learn a ton.

Our only complaint : If your going to have officiating, then OFFICIATE ! Some play was over the safety line. I watched 12 hours of polo on Sat. and 8 hours on Sun. I did not hear one official call regarding safety issues or one warning. In one play, a rider, at full speed, crashed into the goalie, shoving him back into the goal, hurting everyone involved, allowing his team to score. No call!!

But the folks from Columbia were special. They took on the task to try to make every one happy. We look forward to our next tournament.
